While no town is complete without its own castle, Basking Ridge certainly has its own with Phareloch Castle. The Phareloch Castle, situated just off Green Mountain Road in The Hills Section of Bernards Township, the castle was designed and built by the Beatty brothers (William and Frank) originally on 180 acres. The French Normandy style chateau later became Woodcastle School, Chartwell Manor School, Wildwood Castle, Castle Utopia and Burlingame Castle. William Beatty, an architect and advertising executive died before its completion. Stories have it that he still haunts the castle. His brother Frank was Bernards Township Mayor in 1930 and the Lyons Hospital Postmaster. In the early 1970s the castle was partially destroyed by fire. The home is currently owned by Steven Feldstein. The castle was featured on the TV Shows "Unsolved Mysteries" and "In Search of". Photo circa 1920s
